Description: Kids and their families can talk to the animals like Dr. Dolittle for Halloween. Meet parrots, cardinals, egrets, blue, gold and scarlet macaws, Flemish giant rabbits, hairy Highland cows, cashmere goats, coyotes, bison, antelopes, sea lions, Andean bears, waterfowl, sandhill cranes, trumpeter swans, lynxes, pumas, owls and elk.

Venue Description: The Queens Zoo, an affiliate of the Wildlife Conservation Society, opened its doors in 1992 to advance wildlife conservation, promote the study of zoology, and most importantly to visitors, to serve as a first-class zoo. Through fun and informative events, the Queens Zoo educates children and adults about the importance of wild animal advocacy and protection. Through entertainment like the Wildlife Theater Players? musical puppet performances and teen wildlife science career exploration programs, young people have opportunities to expand their knowledge of the animal kingdom.

Exhibits and attractions include an aviary, which gives guests a birds-eye view of animals from the forest floor to the treetops; the farm of domestic animals where llamas, sheep, and pigs can be found; the South American Trail, which is dense with deer, bears, and parrots; and the Woodland Trail, complete with lynx, puma, and owls. If guests wish to get closer to certain animals, make a stop at one of the petting zoos or touch exhibits throughout the grounds.

There are a number of children's, family, school, and summer programs to choose from that all offer up-close animal encounters, behind-the-scenes tours led by zoo educators, and information on every animal in the zoo. Since the Wildlife Conservation Society is a nonprofit organization, volunteer work is very important to the progress and success of the zoo. Volunteer opportunities are available year-round to applicants 18 years and older. Birthday parties are welcome and can be celebrated with organized arts and crafts, animal petting areas, and zookeeper meet and greets.

The Queens Zoo is located on 53-51 111th St. in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, and is open 365 days a year from 10am-5pm on weekdays and 10am-5:30pm on weekends. The entire facility is wheelchair-accessible and service animals are welcome. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for children (3-12), and $6 for seniors. For more information on hours, rates, directions, and exhibits, call 718-271-1500 or visit queenszoo.com.
