Description: Celebrate the New Year at this two-day event by doing hands-on arts and crafts activities such as paper cutting, dough figurines, and calligraphy in the lobby, followed by a 70-minutes mainstage performance. The performances include traditional Chinese sword, ribbon, folk dance, and Peking Opera featuring the living Peking Opera legend, Qi Shu-fang; as well the modern Chinese rock band, Hsu-nami, known for its daring integration of the rock sound with the Chinese classical music instrument: Erhu. The second day of celebration on Feb. 10 will be at the Brooklyn Millennium High School.
Venue Description: Queens Theatre in the Park is located in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park within the New York State Park Pavilion. Initially established as part of the Pavilion for the 1964 World's Fair, QTP was converted into a theater in 1972 and officially adopted its current name in 1985. Since its renovations in 1993, the theater took off as a venue for the arts under a mission to bring art that is challenging, broadening, and entertaining.
The theater's programming features diverse media and forms of art. The QTP hosts dance and theater productions as well as special programs, including those focused on multiculturalism. For children, the theater offers unique series and great deals on tickets. Additionally, the QTP has its own Arts-in-Education program that focuses on bringing art that educates and fosters curiosity in students in the local community. The CentreStage program, a subset of Arts-in-Education, allows students to create their own works of performance art under the guidance of professional actors.
The Queens Theatre is located at 14 United Nations Ave. South in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. For more information on events, pricing, and show times, call 718-760-0064 or visit queenstheatre.org.
